MAAS Presents: Ettinghoff / Hinds / Lyons Trio

  • MAAS Building 1325 N Randolph St Philadelphia, PA, 19122 United States (map)

The Ettingoff/Hinds/Lyons trio combines pretty deconstruction with Appalachian Trance Metal and floating melodic collage. This will be their premiere performance which will feature solos and duos in addition to the trio.

Percussionist Mark Ettingoff lives in Philadelphia making visceral and reflective work across diverse genres and mediums. Killick Hinds of Athens, Georgia plays unusual stringed instruments with an emphasis on unquantifiable rhythms, intuitive intonation, and shamanistic ROYGBIV. Jeanne Lyons of Philadelphia is an interdisciplinary artist in photography, printmaking and sound, distorting reality to create otherworldly visual and auditory landscapes. The trio brings their idiosyncratic sensibilities together for an immersive and transportative evening.

Killick Hinds lives in Athens, Georgia. His music is Appalachian Trance Metal made on unusual stringed instruments with an emphasis on unquantifiable rhythms, intuitive intonation, and shamanistic ROYGBIV. The primary sonic influences on Killick are animals, wind, water, fire, electrical hum, and silence. Pop-culture mashups and ancient and obscure forms infuse his music; the effect more closely resembles speech patterns and emotionally-drawn architecture than it does conventional Western music. Despite its eclectic nature the sounds are surprisingly familiar and accessible to audiences of all ages and levels of musical involvement. Jeanne Lyons is a Philadelphia based interdisciplinary artist and performer working with photography, printmaking, and sound. Her work departs into the abstract, distorting reality to create otherworldly visual and auditory landscapes. Her sonic work is akin to the act of collaging; layering vocal harmonies, floating melodic lines, and manipulated field recordings in real time. By experiencing her work, Lyons hopes to elicit a moment to pause, to alter the emotional state or quality of thought, and to breathe differently. www.iamjeannelyons.com

Mark Ettingoff is a drummer, multi-disciplinary musician, and visual artist with roots in improvisation, experimental sound, and emotionally charged songwriting.

Influenced by drummers like Tony Williams and Greg Saunier, as well as visual artists David Choe and R. Crumb, Mark’s work blends raw creativity with rhythmic precision and a playful sense of experimentation. His projects, including solo releases as The Far Heads, often explore the intersection of music, visual art, and absurdist humor, crafting compositions that are at once visceral and reflective.  Whether navigating the angularities of rhythm, tone, and texture, deconstructing musical clichés, or making music that is danceable, pretty or dissociative, Mark approaches all source material with equal reverence—so long as it inspires him.
