Cole Face by Jacinta Yelland
directed by Trey Lyford
Cole Face is an interactive solo show witnessing the current climate crisis through the eyes of a baby koala and two coal miners. Cole, a talking infant koala, is recovering from severe burns at a wildlife sanctuary in the fire-ravaged Australian outback. As bushfires encroach she embarks on a quest to rescue her best friend, a 1000-year-old eucalyptus tree. In a parallel narrative, thousands of meters underground a gas explosion collapses an active coal mine trapping two miners and igniting a fire. Flames spread along the labyrinth of tunnels towards the miners who contemplate their imminent death caused by the hole they drilled. Cole Face uses documentary theatre, clown, audience interaction, manipulation of light, and magic to immerse the audience in the destruction of nature, history, story, home, and community.
Playwrights Project is led by Stephanie Kyung Sun Walters
