ABOUT THE CHEFS:

David Gilberg and Carla Goncalves opened KZD (the phonetic spelling of cozido, which means "cooked" in Portuguese)  a rustic Portuguese restaurant in 2009.  Through the short four years of it's existence KZD garnered much acclaim and seven James Beard nominations for the couple.  David and Carla continue to practice their craft in and out of Philadelphia, spending a couple of years running a small hotel and restaurant in Thousand Islands, NY and most recently as opening chefs at Cry Baby Pasta.

“…Carla Gonçalves, whose childhood and family in northern Portugal inform the genuine spirit of this unusual endeavor.” – Craig Laban 2010

ABOUT THE MAAS BUILDING:

The Maas Building, originally built in 1859 as the Charles Maas Brewery, later became a trolley car repair shop for the Girard St trolley line. The building had fallen into disrepair when Ben Riesman and Catherine Birdsall bought the building in 2008 and began to nurse it back to life. The Maas Building’s rehab was designed to incorporate modern ideas into the existing industrial structure, using simple, minimal modern design to highlight the building’s industrial past.  Today, the Maas Building is in use as an arts space, cultural entity and event hall for many types of arts activities. With private workspaces as well as public venues, The Maas Dance Studio, The Hi5 Recording Studio, and The 5th Side all call the Maas Building home.

All communities are welcome at the MAAS Building.

 About TINY’S BOTTLE SHOP

Voted Best Natural Wine Shop in 2019 Tiny’s Bottle Shop is nestled into the Lunar Inn.  The Lunar Inn came to be when 4 friends with deep ties to the local restaurant industry decide to open Their own bar. Through a serendipitous meeting, they connect with A-Frame Constructs and begin the long, exciting and often arduous quest of Building out a corner bar and Bottle shop at Richmond & Clementine in Port Richmond.

ABOUT HORSTADTER’S ROCK AND RYE

Slow & Low was inspired by the original Hochstadter's Rock and Rye recipe and a few other 19th century recipes we happened to unearth. Its humble beginnings can be traced back to the saloons of the burgeoning nation‚ where stern-faced barkeeps would pour a shot of rye and let the customers add their own rock candy‚ thereby creating a drink similar to the granddaddy of all cocktails: the Old Fashioned. The effects of the new concoction were so immediate and so powerful that by the mid 19th Century the Rock and Rye cocktail migrated from the bar to the pharmacy.

As a pharmaceutical drink‚ it was used to snuff coughs‚ colds‚ sore throats‚ bronchitis‚ asthma‚ pneumonia‚ consumption‚ sniffles‚ grippes and chills‚ diseases of the throat‚ chest and lungs. No ailment great or small was immune to rock and rye's therapeutic might. Later‚ as men reacquired a taste for it and began drinking it for pleasure again‚ it became an American standard‚ prepared and bottled by distillers and bootleggers alike as it migrated back from the pharmacy to the bar. By then the legend had taken firm root in the national psyche. Celebrated in popular culture‚ rock and rye was mentioned by none other than Sheriff Pat Garrett as the libation of choice for his pals as they chased Billy The Kid across the rugged Western landscape.
